I was ready for the race of my life.
I had been in training for the better part of the last two years for this. The race I was entering was no ordinary race. I mean, I would regularly compete in marathons and triathlons in preparation for this. In fact, I had to think up new training that would prepare me because ordinary training tactics would be too easy. It was grueling and I wanted to quit more than once, but I made it through and now it was time for the final test: a marathon in the Himalayas.
We weren't running to the top of Everest or anything, that would be insane, but it had a route with some pretty good climbs in it. I was excited, to say the least. Something about running and pushing my body to its absolute limits makes me feel exhilarated. That and eating chocolate. I get pretty much the same feeling from chocolate, except the latter doesn't have any feeling of accomplishment to it. You know, for one I have to train for nearly two years, the other I can just take a dollar to the store and sit down on the sidewalk.
So anyway, I have to run with music. I know some running purist probably just scoffed at that, but whatever; I'm not telling you to run with music. So I'm at the base of the Himalayas getting ready to start. I pull out my CD player and turn on my favorite song, “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Michael Bolton, just as the gun goes off. I could run for miles to that song alone. Disaster sets in, however, just when Bolton is about to belt out the epic climax of the song: my CD player runs out of batteries. I start freaking out, wondering what I am going to do. I'm only in the first song of this entire race, am I really going to run that much without any music? Just then, another runner turns to me.
