I had to, even though I only knew him for two days.
Lunch in hand and the puzzling fact that I had just spent over $10 at a mediocre supermarket in mind, I approached the door to the office, ready to get out of the rain to eat. Standing next to the door was Chris, the new guy. After exchanging greetings, it appeared he had a question for me.
“Was that description up today about me?” he asked.
I paused in thought for a second. My work done in the past escapes my memory almost immediately upon finishing so I actually had no idea what he was talking about. I asked him which one.
“The one about the shaver and the guy named Chris … getting ready for a job interview …”
“Oh, right!” I exclaimed, my memory successfully jarred. “Nah, that’s not about you.”
“Are you sure?” he continued, sounding somewhat skeptical. “It couldn’t have come at a more relevant time.”
He did have a point, but I decided to toss him a red herring.
“Nah, I actually wrote that description months ago.”
I returned to my lair, or desk as some people call it, and began plotting. This new guy, Chris I should probably call him, needed a description about him. He was hot on my trail and the red herring I threw wouldn’t distract him for long … something told me it wouldn’t be that easy. Of course, work somehow always manages to force itself into these situations, this time in the form of the Logitech Z313 Speaker System.
“OK,” I thought to myself. “How am I supposed to make this relevant?”
A quick brainstorming session yielded various results. Should it be about Chris as an ordinary photographer that one day falls into a time warp while holding the Z313, launching him 2000 years into a future run by cyborgs? Should these cyborgs also be half-cotton with a dangerous aversion to candied yams? Would the Z313 evolve to the point where it could move voluntarily and speak English, thus becoming Chris’ perfect sidekick during an emotionally tragic turn of events to his otherwise happy life?
“Yes … yes,” I mumbled under my breath. “All of these things should happen.”
