I didn’t want to break the news, but I had to.
It’s always difficult when you have to give someone a reality check. Sometimes, however, someone is so far removed from said reality that it’s practically a health concern. One particular situation was not exactly a health issue, but delusions were playing into its life way too much for me to just stand by and let it happen.

I met the Energizer Energi to Go Portable Charger a while back when we were both at the Cleveland Cavaliers Summer Camp Program. I was there as an avid basketball fan and casual player that was looking to get a little bit better; the Energi to Go was there because it wanted to be in the NBA one day.

“You can’t be in the NBA,” I would tell it multiple times. “You’re just a portable charger.”

That fact did not deter it, however, with its answer mostly just being, “Well then I’ll be the first.”

Its determination was impressive, I will say that, but as the years went by such behavior was destructive to its existence. I remember meeting it for coffee a few weeks ago after it had been hired by a family to charge their mobile devices.

“Yeah, I’m doing that now,” it told me. “But it’s only a matter of time before scouts see my raw talent and a team scoops me up.”

When I heard it wasn’t even holding to its promise of charging mobile devices because it was too busy training to play basketball, I knew I had to say something. We had a difficult conversation and it didn’t end well. It said it never wanted to talk to me again.

For the most part, I figured we would speak again. It would eventually realize I was right and we would come to an understanding about it. For its credit, it’s never easy to give up your dreams. That all changed, however, when I was watching television that night to see that the Energi to Go was suiting up for the injury-laden New York Knicks. It played spectacularly. They said it was the craziest discovery since Jeremy Lin.
