Yes, I did say clams.
The waitress stepped back for a second, an acceptable reaction to my request. She grabbed a chair at the table next to mine and used it for support as her body threatened to give way. The woman, probably in her early 20's, started panting excessively with one hand placed over her chest to monitor her breathing.

“Did you say clams?” she asked, exasperated.

“I did yes, and a Diet Coke please,” I replied calmly, not wanting to startle the kind waitress who did an excellent job of informing me of the specials of the day.

“OK, got it,” she said and walked away to the kitchen.
