The year was 2999.
Everyone on the nearly deserted planet Earth was getting ready for the new millennium. When I say everyone, of course I don’t actually mean that literally. A few hundred years prior, the line between “everyone” and “everything” was blurred. Artificial intelligence became so advanced that toasters and flashlights started to integrate into human society. It wasn’t pretty, let me tell you that. After a while, Earth was so polluted that human life could no longer be sustained and all of humanity was exiled into space.

On the eve of the new year, the 7” Google Android Tablet sat alone in his single bedroom flat, wondering what kind of night was ahead of him. His best friend, a convection oven, was taking him to a party being hosted by a friend of his from high school.

“You know she’s single …” he hinted when inviting him a few days ago.

The Android Tablet wasn’t sure if he was ready for such a commitment. It had been over a year since his girlfriend, a car radio from a Dodge Stratus, fell into a pool of water. He knew he had to move on, but he simply hadn’t yet. Maybe, he thought. Maybe.

At the party, it become increasingly obvious that the convection oven was trying to set the two of them up. The Android Tablet thought the girl, a Heckler & Koch military grade laser rifle, was cute, but he still wasn’t sure.

“Hey there, thanks for coming!” she said to him, introducing herself. “I heard you have a MicroSD card slot, is that true?”

“Yeah, it’s true,” he responded, nervously shuffling his feet.

“Wow! That’s SO cool. I LOVE MicroSD card slots!”

The Android Tablet started to smile a bit, or at least as much as something without a mouth can smile. Maybe this was going to work out after all, he thought. Maybe.
