It all came down to one play.
In a house on Twin Peaks overlooking the city of San Francisco, we are silent. None of us look at each other and no one moves. My face paint has been severely irritating me for the past few hours, but it’s virtually unnoticeable now. I thought distraction from this feeling was impossible, but based on what I am seeing right now I might need to change my definition of impossible.

Alex Smith had just spiked the ball at the 14 yard line. I watch as they huddle together and wonder what they’re saying. The roar from the crowd seems deafening, but it couldn’t be more the opposite in this living room. A few fizzing sodas on the table make more noise than the four of us on this couch. I have my elbows on my knees, hands on my chin; leaning forward, ready to cover my face if the worst should happen.

They line up and I can’t hear the announcers. I can’t hear the crowd and I can’t hear the grunts and yells from the players; I can’t even hear that soda. All I hear is my heart beating through my chest, threatening to pop out and kill me over a passionate hope that this year is going to be different; that this year is going to be our year.

Smith takes the snap, falls back and the television goes black. In unison we all scream.

“Oh no!” says Tony, who lives here. “Gotta change batteries!”

“Why does your TV run on batteries?” we all yell at him.

“It’s a long story, but it’s OK! I just got a 60-Pack of Fuji Extra Long Life Double A Batteries! Can you believe that? A 60-pack!”

“PUT THE FREAKING BATTERIES IN!”

“Jeez, alright!” he says, scrambling to get the batteries out. He stops and his face gives it all away.
