He shined his flashlight at the noise behind him.
Some time into the journey, he questioned why he went alone. He didn't usually, but time constraints on both his and his friends' schedules prompted him to adopt a “show must go on” kind of mentality. What initially instilled a sense of self-confidence and proud independence in him had now transformed into regret. Nothing but regret.
He was on his way down from the roof of the Packard Plant in Detroit, Michigan. At the top, he fiddled around with the 6-in-1 Educational Do It Yourself Solar Powered Robot Kit, but now he was out of the light, back into the dilapidated interior where you constantly need to be on your guard.
While walking past some row boats, suddenly he heard the sharp clang of a steel door. Flashlight at the ready, he whipped around and put a spotlight on the area, finding nothing. He could have sworn there was the scurry of footsteps after the clang, but it's also possible that it was a gust of wind. A few deep breaths and vigilant searching put him slightly more at ease, but he proceeded with caution. The risks of running into a police officer or, even worse, some kind of vagrant or a gang.
Odd noises followed him around as he tried to get out. In his slight panic, he foolishly kept forgetting the way back out. Dead end after dead end met him as he became increasingly sure that he was no longer alone in the area. Footsteps picked up with his own and ceased only momentarily after he would stop. He began to run, hearing the mysterious guest follow his every move. The flashlight in front of him, leading the way, he tried to illuminate his path as best he could, but as he turned the corner, he was face to face with a shadowy figure. Immediately, he turned around and ran in the opposite direction.
“Jeez, why do you keep running away from me?” the man yelled. “You left your Robot Kit on the roof! I’m trying to give it back to you!”
