A dark wind blew over the scene.
Robert surveyed his backyard with subdued fury. Today was the day of his First Annual Robert Meskauskas Backyard Bash; it had officially kicked off two hours ago. He sent the invitations to their respective recipients a month in advance and even made T-Shirts that said, “I went to the First Annual Robert Meskauskas Backyard Bash and I had fun.”

Despite the months of preparation, both mental and physical, it wasn't going quite as well as Robert had planned. He stood in the open doorway of the sliding glass door that led to the porch overlooking his backyard and pursed his lips. A dark wind blew over the party, scattering red plastic cups all over the grass. But that didn't bother him. The clown he hired as entertainment spent the better part of his morning swimming in Old Crow and even brought more for himself in a flask. But that didn't bother him. The clown eventually was hit by a flying tree branch and was hurled into the grill, causing a massive propane fire to erupt. But that didn't bother him. During the two hours that had elapsed, no one had shown up. That bothered him.

He called one of the guests later that night, his co-worker Sandra.

“Oh I'm sorry Robert,” she told him over the phone.

“Was it because of the storm?” he asked, wishfully thinking.

“Storm? ...oh right, the storm! Yes, that's why I couldn't make it, I'm very sorry Robert. I have to go, I'll see you on Monday.”

Robert spent the rest of the weekend fuming. Something was up, but no one was being honest with him.

At work on Monday, Robert was getting some coffee in the break room when he overhead Sandra and Yolanda talking around the corner.

“I can't believe I made it home on Saturday!” Sandra exclaimed.

“Oh my God, me too! Jake's party was awesome! I can't believe he had the Inflatable Salad Bar Buffet, that was incredible!”

“Oh, especially the part when he got in it like a raft at the end and floated away!”

Robert's eyes narrowed and he instinctively crushed his Styrofoam coffee cup. Jake? Jake? The nerve!

“I'll fix him,” Robert vowed to himself, “he'll rue the day he crossed me!”
