Yes, I would like to know what time it is.
I was sitting down in Central Park on a rock near the southwest corner with a friend. We could see the Time Warner Center looming overhead as we chatted and watched the people enjoying the park. I was considering buying an ice cream from a man pushing a cart down the path, but I got scared and decided not to.
“Why don't you want any ice cream?” my friend asked.
“Well, it's a long story. A very long and violent story that usually causes me to break wind.”
“Oh.....”
We sat in silence for a few minutes after that one. I wasn't sure how she would react to the story of my terror in reference to ice cream men. Generally, I try not to tell the story because it scares everyone that hears it and also causes me to break wind in public, not something I routinely enjoy. Sometimes that can be funny, but only in certain contexts with close friends. This was not a close friend, therefore telling the story was out of the question.
“Well, are you going to tell me the story?” she asked, breaking our pause.
“No, telling this story is out of the question. Maybe someday, but not on this day.”
She seemed disappointed but that was alright. This story has been know to polarize people. A good portion of people I've told it to have said they wish they never heard it. Some of them lay awake each night, unable to take the images of the story out of their minds. At this point, I didn't want to put that kind of load on her mind, she had other things to worry about.
Just then, we heard someone yell, “SLAP!” from someone in the park. We kept hearing it over and over, getting closer to us. We continued looking out into the park until we saw that one person was running around to people and slapping them with something while yelling the word. Suddenly, he was headed straight for us.
“SLAP!” he yelled and hit me in the wrist with something. Before I could pound him in the face, I looked down to see that he had put a Slap Snap Whack Watch on my wrist.
“Wow, thanks!” I said once I had a better grasp on the situation.
“Don't thank me, I'm just doing my job,” he responded solemnly.
“Do you work for the company that makes these?”
“No....” he replied, and then ran off.
